Better title: the UN decides to waste everyone’s time by floating a pie-in-the-sky universal money ID that won’t change anything, instead of being effective at handling things that actually matters.

For an organization with the scope of the United Nations, they ethically cannot use their resources on things besides ending wars, injustice, oppression, tyranny, and hunger. The people who put together this idea should be tasked with 40 hours a week of defending the concept in lengthy debates against crazy people who think it’s the number of the beast, which would be a fitting punishment for wasting everyone’s time with it.

For real though, this would be something the IMF or World Bank might try to standardize on, but even then what a monumental task. All the UN members don’t even agree on what kind of exchange system they should use …

Horrible idea to have them tied to banking. National digital ID systems should be exactly that, national. Separated from commercial dealings. Maybe able to be optionally linked and leveraged in commercial contracts etc. However one shouldn’t need to have a bank account to have an ID. Or any other commercial account for that matter. Have the national census bureau or police run the ID system.
