8·19 hours agoPutting trees set back from the sideline would also improve the experience for the soccer players and their families, since they’d have shade to rest in while watching or at the half. Seems a bit “cutting off their nose to spite their face.”

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•One day USB-A will be so uncommon that people will say "back in my day, it took at least 3 tries to put the USB in"English
14·19 hours agoOne day, children will ask why we don’t make the plugs different shapes so you know if you’re using a 60 watt cable or a 240 watt cable or something in between.
(I do not know anything about electricity so I’m certain there’s a better way to explain this but it’s bananas I have USB cables that look identical but my Steam Deck will die while plugged in if I grab the wrong one)

PieFed Meta@piefed.social•What PieFed's "social credit system" actually doesEnglish
1·1 day agoThanks for explaining the mechanics. I’m kinda glad you’re thinking about federating moderation actions for blocked accounts instead of me cuz that sounds complicated and difficult to get right.

PieFed Meta@piefed.social•What PieFed's "social credit system" actually doesEnglish
1·1 day agoI understand your meaning more broadly, but thinking narrowly about the mechanics of blocking and federation, does a community’s owner or moderator being banned from an instance effect how posts to that community from other actors are disseminated across the fediverse?

2·2 days agoI suspect I can infer from this I should create a separate wnba community on a separate instance, then, rather than continuing to post there?

6·2 days agoIt’s interesting because I encounter the red triangles fairly often, but generally have good interactions with those accounts. Everyone in the wnba community has them, but my interactions there have been fine and reasonable so far, presumably because the poor reputation is from interactions in other communities — someone could be very confrontational about politics, but amiable about basketball, for instance. I suspect there’s a reasonable chance I have the red triangles as well, because I do a lot of posting in communities that I suspect have been flagged as “low quality” because of their low subscriber count relative to the frequency of posts. I get what you’re going for, and I think it’s a good direction to be heading, but it feels like there’s a little more tinkering to be done before it’s working as intended.

6·2 days agoI wish I had this article to link when we were having the ask lemmy thread about trolling, because the way it has entered the lexicon outside the terminally online is never harmless, and always intensely negative, and this is a great example.

61·2 days agoWe’re having trouble finishing the light rail spur that is intended to serve my neighborhood, and our transit authority needs $300 million to complete the design. The budget shortfall is $34.5 billion on a projected $42.5 billion project. And that’s one line for one neighborhood in one city.

World News@lemmy.world•Meta becomes latest firm to say its AI hacked another companyEnglish
151·2 days agoHow much do you think Irregular charges for one of these press releases? The technical setup is pretty easy — it’s just an llm with no sandbox and a live internet connection plus a “please hack” prompt — but they probably do have to coordinate with a victim and presumably there’s some damage to their reputation. It’s gotta be like 8 figures, yeah? Seems like a good business if you can get in to it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•just got an unexpected 1k refund... what should I do with it?English
16·3 days agoI suspect paying off the installment loan is your best bet, unless it a 0% apr loan, or there are penalties for early repayment. If that is the case, your best bet is to put the $1k in a 12 month certificate of deposit (a CD), which will get you a higher interest rate and remove a lot of the temptation to spend it early.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you feel about animal and AI consciousness?English
2·4 days agoI don’t think my argument is that you’re misguided, or that empathy for other living creatures isn’t good, I think my argument is that all the work necessary to end human slavery is prerequisite to ending ai or animal slavery, so it makes sense to build the broader coalition in service of the more achievable goal that is more likely to help conscious beings before extending it to other beings we suspect might be conscious. Milk before meat, so to speak.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you feel about animal and AI consciousness?English
10·4 days agoI think if you’re afraid of enslaving conscious minds, your efforts are best spent ending human slavery, where we are most certain that conscious minds are being enslaved, rather than ending AI or animal slavery, which may or may not be the enslavement of conscious minds. Walk Free estimates in January of 2026 there were 50 million humans in slavery.

51·4 days agoThis response was always a bit flimsy on social media where the goal is to be social, but it lost all its venom when every search engine was intentionally gutted to drive traffic to llm-based products, and 90% of the internet was turned to slop.
