A smart tv without an internet connection is usually close enough to a dumb TV. It’s not like your TV needs regular security updates so leaving it off your home network is fine.

Likely unrelated, but after I’ve cut raw garlic cloves everything feels weird, almost sticky, no matter how much I wash my hands.
My guess is the clickbait title and photo.
Revenge of the Titanic.
That’s the expression of someone who let rip what they thought was a fart but got more than they bargained for.
Only on taco tuesdays
Some alien intern got confused and thought drawing crop circles was supposed to be done on the crops rather than in the fields of crops.
As the current owner of a 1930’s era property with tons of glass and rubble in the ground, please don’t. We have landfills so that individual properties don’t get filled with trash.
Smart blinds can also serve a similar function. My bedroom catches some light from passing headlights and there’s enough light pollution to affect my sleep. However, my SO really struggles to wake up if it’s dark. Smart blinds have been a great solution for us. The biggest drawback is noise. Affordable blinds are not silent.
The headline says worlds first all-electric train rather than worlds first all-battery-powered train. There have been many all-electric trains before. So the headline as written is incorrect.
That depends on your client. Connect for lemmy shows a placeholder for comments from blocked instances. You can click to show the comment anyway or just blissfully ignore the high probability rage bait.
I actually like that implementation, because the obnoxiousness of hexbear users is context dependent. On posts about gardening and nolawns I’ll usually see what they have to say. On political posts, I usually regret reading their comments. So it’s somewhat nice to opt-in to comments on a case by case basis.
Chronic Wasting Disease is a particularly scary prion disease that is highly dependent on deer population density.
In a similar vein, I prefer celery leaves over the stalks. They have a better flavor imo and they don’t feel like your chewing on stringy water.
It would be nice for car keys and other remotes to never run out of battery. This seems like a good convenience technology, assuming it can be brought to market at comparable prices to li ion cells.
Did you even read the article? NPR also published the same format about Trump’s convention speech which covered 162 false and misleading statements and is linked in the beginning of this article. Also, if you read the content of this piece, most of the explanations just make Trump look bad.
There is also the issue that if building nuclear plants takes too long and is too expensive to be the solution, then such a project would also be too late to matter. Also transmission losses likely mean this is a solution for much less of the world population than you think. If we had a truly global lossless grid, then we would need much less energy storage to begin with.
Impracticalities aside, absurd geoengineering what-ifs are entertaining. Thanks for sharing.
Pumped hydro is both very geologically limited and environmentally detrimental. That technology alone will not substantially reduce the need for other power storage technologies/ peaker plants.
That’s not how it works. What matters is the state of your residency and the state that your paychecks come from. If you get paid in a state you don’t reside in, you have to file in both, unless there’s a reciprosity agreement. Many states will allow deductions for income tax paid in another state. So for example if the state your employer is in has a 4% rate, and the state you reside in has a 6% rate, then you’d end up paying 4% to state A and 2% to state B. It is possible to get double taxed depending on which states are involved.
So the CEO will at the very least have to file in California.
The main problem with smoothies is that they make it easy to really overconsume fruit sugars. People generally put way more fruit into a smoothie than they would normally consume in a single sitting. Having some grapes with a salad or a banana with eggs and toast is fine. Dumping a banana, 1 cup berries, 1/2 cup yogurt, 1/4 orange juice, and a teaspoon of honey in a blender then chugging it in the span of a couple minutes is problematic.
The bad flooding is because of how steep those areas are. Down in Florida, water takes a while to make its way into the creeks, streams, and rivers. The areas with the most extreme flooding is because entire mountainsides worth of rainfall drains in the span of a couple days.
Eastern TN and western NC also had a ton of rainfall from thunderstorms just before Helene so the ground was already saturated. For reference check out this rain gauge in Asheville.

The rain from Helene didn’t really get to Western NC until the early hours of Friday the 27th. That gauge was already at 10 inches by that time. So really the storm before Helene brought more rain than Helene did. Either the thunderstorm or Helene alone would have been moderate, but manageable flash floods, but the two back to back was insane.
