No, not the list of airports affected. The other list. We haven’t forgotten, Donald.

But so did a Trump run, it used to be a joke when he put his hat in.
No one is laughing now.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump Claims You Need ID to Buy Groceries in Postelection Meltdown
6·1 day agoYes. Or just not requiring it, as our laws are built around free movement (you don’t need an ID or to ID yourself just because some official requests it), and voting fraud by individuals is very rare (while voting fraud by organizations that get power with certain elections is common).

31·1 day agoGreat solution for a small part of the US population. The country is designed around car transport, it’s a dead end forced on us long ago. Few cities have (and can have) adequate mass transit that serves even a fraction of the area. I’m anti-car too, but also realize that it’s how things work for most people. So yes, fuel or transportation infrastructure is a right as long as people have to get around to survive.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Elon Musk Announces Plan to Control Climate by Surrounding Earth in Adjustable Satellites
171·2 days agoYes, but there are far easier and cheaper ways to go. Dude must have just read about using things from space to control sunlight input and thought he’s such a genius surely he can figure it out. I guess he skipped over all the debunking that such ideas get.
And crucially, once we jump on the geoengineering train, we better not stop. It will only slow things and buy more time, but if we stop after beginning, the spike will be catastrophic (probably, there’s still so much we learn, but it won’t be a solution). But we will go that route, because economic health is far more important than anything else, and never plateaus by its very nature. There must be growth, or it all crashes down.

Technology@lemmy.world•Death of beloved neighborhood cat sparks outrage against robotaxis in San Francisco
14·2 days agoSome of us are old enough to remember how cats and other creatures would get killed by old car engine designs with the large open fan driven by a belt. They would sleep on that fan housing and not realize the danger when the car was started. So there have been improvements that have helped, maybe not necessarily for that reason. For what it’s worth, I’m on the side of minimizing cars for so many reasons, but it has been worse for animals in the past.
Yes, I understand that concern. If we had more people creating posts… I’m a hypocrite, I don’t have many posts myself.
I wonder what the breakdown of discussions started from users vs. bots is. While I can see your point especially from a spam pov, one purpose of this kind of bot is to pull from other sources and get a conversation going. If no one is interested, then it just falls to the bottom. I often see posts complaining that Lemmy/fediverse isn’t as active as Reddit was/is, and yet without some of this automation it would be far deader as people don’t tend to start posts as much as reply to existing one. If a particular bot/community is flooding your feed too much, that can be easily be blocked, or let the mods/admin know that it needs some adjustment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would happen to society if all magnets suddenly lost their magnetism?
12·4 days agoMagnetism is “just” the ability of some elements to line up their fields so that the effects are felt beyond their electron shells. It’s much more complex than that, but magnetism is in all matter, just some more than others. For it to stop at any rate would be like changing a constant of the universe. I would imagine very quickly things would be very different and we wouldn’t be around to witness it.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•With how shitty some Christians are, you really have to wonder if Lucifer or Satan is truly "evil"
9·4 days agoHeinlein wrote about this very topic in “Job: A Comedy of Justice”.
It’s a version of the age old question on how do you keep someone from stealing your images while still being able to show it. No one can see an image without having downloaded it already. The best you can do is layer in things like watermarks to make cleaning it into a “pure” version not worth the trouble. Same with text, poison it so it’s less valuable without a lot of extra work.
LLMs can’t do math well. Add in the factor of needing to understand the question first before doing the math and it might work better than you think.
Is that why he does it? I’ll be honest, I’m starting to read it okay, just a bit slower than usual.

politics @lemmy.world•Marjorie Taylor Greene tells Bill Maher she believes extraterrestrials are demons
13·5 days agoReligions are very adaptable. At least the ones that survive long times. Simply need to reinterpret scripture to include the new information, even claim to predict it. I think there’s a certain percentage or type of people who need some kind of religious structure to deal with life, it’s a biological thing. Being skeptical and setting aside your own beliefs for analysis is not an easy thing to do.
Of course it could go the other way and aliens confirm that the religion is true, just maybe that our records of events is off a bit. Cue the joke about the aliens saying they absolutely know Jesus, he comes by every year because they give him cookies or chocolate, and then ask why he doesn’t come to Earth regularly, what did we give him?

politics @lemmy.world•Judges Order Trump to Pay for SNAP, Killing His Shutdown Strategy
8·5 days agoSo there’s obviously a back and forth on the legal side, but presumably people are right now getting the funds when they go buy food, right? It says “will not have to make hard choices” but doesn’t specifically say there’s money for them right NOW.

Might have had one of those pop up buttons to show the seal is broken. Ideally a stocker would see it, or the customer when selecting it, but I wonder how many people look that closely.
