In my experience it’s not the task itself, it’s the reason for it.

I promise whatever your current PC is can run Linux just fine. Pull the trigger. Install Linux on a USB, boot your current hardware to the thumb drive to take it for a spin, when you can see it works fine, flash the main drive with Linux and don’t look back.
