Dating back to the first Android phone, the G1. I was installing custom ROMs on that first, and then when I eventually got a Nexus 5, I started to de-Google.

I’m on an iPhone now because I had a string of bad luck with how shit most Android phones are, but I’m still privacy and security-minded:

• I have no social media accounts - no one can actually find me except through my personal website or LinkedIn (but they obviously have to know my name first for either). If/when people complain about it, I shrug at them. I’m not signing up for TikTok so you can send me some vapid video
• I use a VPN 24/7
• Proton as my mail provider
• My wife and I don’t use any streaming services - Stremio for everything (through Real Debrid so no torrents can be tracked)
• I use a virtual card service so that absolutely nothing has our actual credit and debit card numbers (some with limits set so a service can’t arbitrarily raise rates on us, or go rogue and accidentally charge too much)
• Windows is not allowed to touch a single computer I own. It’s either macOS for work stuff, or Linux for everything else

I use the ElfHosted extension as a fallback when Torrentio has a rough day. I don’t like the way it displays data like seeders, file size, etc, but it works well for getting results in a pinch.

I’ve never had a TT account but have been on Rednote for months. I don’t use any other social media outside of it, except Bluesky. Rednote is fun and folks are nice. It’s very focused on learning and sharing, so you get content that’s actually interesting, as opposed to the onslaught of hateful, vitriolic bullshit US-based social media loves to force into your feed alongside the 50 ads.

Yep. When federating with so many instances, nothing is truly deleted unless every single instance honors its removal. That’s just the reality. The nice thing is that as an instance owner, I can see the mod log of everything from the places I federate with. So admins at least have a point of reference to work together. I also have the ability to restore comments and things that were deleted. I’ve never used it because I prefer to stay in sync with everyone else, but I’m 1 person. There are many instances and mine is microscopic.

None of this crap is even consumer tech. They use the consumer as a guinea pig so they can eventually sell it to the military. We are the test subjects and only the idiots are buying.

The industry wants senior engineers but isn’t willing to put in the work to make entry level engineers into senior. If you are considering a comp sci degree, don’t bother. Like the article says, train with cheaper skill-based courses. You may hate AI or not see the value, but if you want to survive in the tech field now, you have to learn how to harness AI tools (and that doesn’t mean writing prompts).

This is the state of tech now. The capitalists once again have managed to suck all of the air and fun out of the room so that they can go live on some compound when things inevitably go to shit because of their irresponsible behavior.
