I don’t know if there are management problems or not but I’m pretty keen to see more pedestrian areas.
Not so sure about that artist impression of sitting on outdoor seating with busses roaring past your elbows. I’d prefer no traffic but removing cars is a good start.
Yeah, I think we’re at the point where unless what is being proposed is catastrophic, they should just get on with it. We’ve had years and years of consultation, it’s not like people haven’t had the opportunity to voice their opinion.
In my view, this will be an improvement, even if it’s not perfect.
Great. Now can we finally start making some progress on the ‘moving’ part?
Recently it seems everything is making that worse. The buses and trains are completely wrecked, speed reductions across Wellington are on the cards, we’ve limited the speed and access of scooters.
The cycle lanes are about the only positive thing, and much of that is just putting some green paint on existing roads. We also have huge gaps in the cycle network.
What amount would you suggest bus drivers should be paid?
Currently Wellington bus drivers are paid around $30 per hour.
I think there is a general lack of people to employ (i.e. a low unemployment rate), rather than it being specifically the fault of their pay. While paying them more would attract more people to the job, it would be nice if starting out teachers got paid more than bus drivers.
@Dave capitalism suggests that the answer is “increase until you have applicants”
Absolutely, but the problem is that those people come from somewhere. Increase until teachers leave to drive busses?
I think the solution is coming, it’s just coming in a form we don’t want - economic downturn and redundancies, rising unemployment, creating a larger candidate pool.
@Dave increase teachers, nurses, bus drivers salaries. Reduce untaxed real estate profits
Oh I forgot to mention the solution needs to be politically palatable too! Or did I just make the task impossible 😆
@Dave increase taxes. All the people making far more cash benefit from nursing and teaching and bus drivers. Taxes lead to better services.
Good. Let’s get on with it.
The people against this have no idea what they want. Is Wellington dead or will this move kill it? Was de-pedestrianising Manners Mall a bad idea or should we avoid handing places over to pedestrians?
We gotta do something, and LGWM at least is a step in the right direction.
