The USA has lost its status. It will never regain it because what it has become was allowed to happen, and can again.

No one will ever believe or trust the USA again

No one will ever believe or trust the USA again

It’s easy to say this, but I think it’s important to look at this in a big perspective. Look at Germany post WWII. In 1945, it was unthinkable that Germany would have the role in Europe that they have today. Not only that, but in my country (and plenty of other previously occupied countries), Germany and Germans are typically regarded as an important and reliable partner/ally, and a decent people.

The key here is that Germany and Germans have spent generations burning into their common ethos that something like WWII can never happen again. They’ve had a personal reckoning as a nation that has been noticed, to put it lightly.

If the US is ever going to be trusted again, they need an internal reckoning with what has happened. They need to show, over many years, that they’re not only repenting for what has been done, but actively putting systems in place to prevent it from happening again. This doesn’t happen in one or two elections. This is damage that will take decades, maybe even generations, to repair.

Not having a reckoning is nigh foundational to the U.S. at this point. kinda came close with the civil war. flirted with it at times in the 1970s. been mostly backpeddling from it since
