Wow… that was really, really awful.
So basically what they did was skip over at least a half dozen or so episodes worth of exposition to get to the point at which Flum kicks that awful woman’s ass (which admittedly was still satisfying to see, though I’m sure nowhere near as satisfying as it would’ve been if we’d gotten the full context first), and then sat her in a room with some other characters and narrated a condensed version of another twenty or thirty or forty episodes worth of story, the end.
I don’t know exactly how it ended because I stopped watching, since I liked the story, so I’m going to read the LNs (or maybe the manga), and I didn’t want to spoil the ending. Which is another sense in which this was a really, really awful episode.
There are a number of different ways to deal with the fact that you’re adapting a story that’s too long and detailed to fit into a single season of an anime. After seeing this, I would pretty confidently say that telling a fully detailed partial story, then awkwardly narrating a condensed, handwaved version of the rest of it, is far and away the worst of them.
It deserved better.
Yeah the last 3 episodes just like… what the fuck? I mean the show wasn’t particularly good but like those were extraordinarily fucking out of nowhere bad. To the point I thought it was a dream she was having until it just… kept going?
I liked it most of the way through (enough that I’ve tracked down the original - it was a web novel first - and am already reading it). I liked the fact that it kept defying conventions and I really liked the mix of genres - the way it switched effortlessly from drama to CGDCT to horror to SOL to yuri to battle to… And I was even willing to forgive episode 10 for making Flum uncharacteristically stupid, since that set up the showdown with Dein in ep 11. It was cheesy and disappointing, but I was willing to cut them that much slack.
But I don’t think they could’ve made this episode any worse if they’d tried.
