Sweet wrappers, drinks containers and fast-food packaging were the most common items, campaigners said.

Ron Ford, 75, a volunteer litter picker in Torfaen, said roadside litter was a “constant problem” and certain “grot spots” required repeated cleaning.

Fellow volunteer Alison Harrison, 59, from Cwmbran, said the problem had “got a lot worse” in recent years.

    Aren’t “main roads” mostly A roads and motorways? Roads that aren’t famous for attracting a lot of foot traffic?

    That seems like something that is really obvious, the A1 isn’t exactly a great picnic spot.
