Left, LRI Photon II, using 2x CR2016 coin cells. Middle, junky 2x CR1616 squeeze light, source forgotten. Right, 2xCR1220 “Fauxton”, and AAA battery for scale. Background is graph paper with 5mm grid.
I got the CR1220 light on Deal Extreme some years back, but can’t find them on DX or AliExpress now. Anyone know where to get more? It actually works decently. It’s a scaled down Photon II with a 3mm led.
More small light pics coming. :)
For you ultrLighters, the Photon II weighs about 6.5g and it is really all the flashlight you need unless you are night hiking or whatnot. It’s plenty for finding stuff in your tent at night etc. The CR1220 light might weigh 3g, idk. I will weigh it when I get a chance. But I don’t know where to get them now. Photonlight.com has the Photon lights.
Good stuff @solrize! The Photon II is a classic going all the way back to Ray Jardine’s Trail Life. Appreciate you mentioning the weights, gotta get that Fauxton on a scale 😉 With how far LEDs and rechargeable batteries have come do you think these guys still have a place?
I still like them. Good quality lithium non-recharble cells have 10+ year shelf life and work over a very wide temperature range. Rechargeables are great if you use the light a lot, but are fussier about recharging and temperature. You can get a 1st Gen Nitecore Tube (11g) for $5 at illumn.com if you want a rechargeable. I think Nite-ize may have something similar.
LRI has kept up to date with improving LEDs in the Photon series over time, so recent ones will have recent, efficient LEDs. They are standard 5mm LEDs, so upgrading an older Photon is also quite easy.
