World News@lemmy.world•Vatican commission votes against allowing women as Catholic deaconsEnglish
5·2 days agoI was raised Catholic, and I asked my mother once why we never saw women as deacons or priests. I was told that women should not be permitted to teach (scripture). There’s a few verses about that in the new testament, in Timothy specifically if I recall correctly.
Imagine how confusing that was for me considering most of the faculty at the Catholic school were nuns! Or that my mother herself was Catechism teacher for Confirmation.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I hate how inescapable politics are on Lemmy, but at least nobody's constantly asking how blind people wipe their butt or pick up their dog's poop then completely ignoring me when I try to answer.
6·3 days agoBe the change you want to see! Lemmy loves specific animal communities! Bats and superbowl come to mind
Lightboxes are pretty easy to build, and can be done under $20 if you already have a few lamps or a very bright window
Anyway, your art is neat!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why isn't it considered vegan to harvest animals who die naturally?
30·16 days agoI think you mean Jainism? It isn’t Hindu.
They also have a very strict vegetarian diet, they won’t even eat root vegetables so burrowing insects aren’t disturbed

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the highest level of mathematics that should be expected to graduate high school?
2·17 days agoI think he doesn’t need math tutoring. He needs someone to sit with him while he does his homework, and he needs encouragement. Our education system just marches people through to graduation without giving them the chance to breathe.
But, I agree, our teachers have been struggling for decades.

Data is Beautiful@mander.xyz•Government shutdowns in the U.S.English
9·19 days agoReagan was an asshole. Tldr: the first one happened because he vetoed the spending bill, the second and third happened because he was trying to pressure congress over progressive policies he didn’t agree with and relented on the days that the shutdowns happened

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the highest level of mathematics that should be expected to graduate high school?
2·19 days agoI tutor high school students in math and science. They’ve all taken a budgeting class. One of my students is taking calculus and I genuinely feel he has a better understanding of it than I do!
I am glad he has the option to take calculus, he’s one that gets bored at the place other students need. But I really don’t think many students need it or can fit it in their graduation tracks.
We also need to consider how difficult algebra was for some, to the point that a lot of adults think they hate math. I like the comment in the op that Applied Calculus skills (real-world story problems) are useful, and I think that would have more impact than two-three semesters of calculus.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does digital payments made cash wallets obsolete?
2·20 days agoThere are still a ton of folks who are cash only in the US. Some of it is because cards and digital transactions make it easy to track people (in the US at least). Others can’t open bank accounts for one reason or another, usually because they don’t have an address or appropriate ID. And quite a few only accept cash so they don’t have to report their income, because they are on disability or they owe money to the government.
I’m actually dealing with my last example right now. I want to hire someone, they only want cash but I live 5 hours away from them so it’s causing some difficulty. They don’t even want a check because they are so cautious about their income being tracked that way.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL Social Pain (rejection) and physical pain overlap parts of the same neural pain pathway, and acetaminophen (paracetamol) alleviate social pain. Proof of social pain hurts as much as physical painEnglish
2·25 days agoI was just making a joke :)
Tylenol does not cause autism. Given how often people with autism experience RSD it is funny to think that an imagined cause of autism could also be a treatment for one of its symptoms

61·26 days agoThe commenter that you replied to was expressing despair at how difficult their life is because they have AuDHD. They are not saying that Tylenol can turn off their brain, they are instead asking for recommendations to escape their misery.
You could try understanding the comment chain and comments before saying something that sounds cruel like:
“Are you a nice, forgiving person? It works for good people only”.
Many neurodivergent people grow up abused by their parents because of their needs, and struggle with feeling like they are not good, not good enough, and not worthy of love. Saying what you did, unprovoked, to a ND person can send someone into a self-hatred spiral that is wholly unnecessary and has nothing to do with what they actually said.

1·26 days agoRSD is not limited to people with autism or ADHD. It’s just very common among neurodivergent folks

Assuming Lemmy is still around by then, the front page will have a cat on it.
