Technology@piefed.social•Windows 12 Reportedly Set for Release This Year as a Fully Modular, Subscription-Based, AI-Focused OS
14·3 months agoWhat strikes me as a not very legitimate rumor is the NPU requirement. I upgraded to a high end CPU last year and it lacks a NPU. If it becomes a requirement, they’d exclude most of the consumer space. The tpu requirement wasn’t that bad as it had been around for a while.
AI will be a focus, though, I guess. Gonna skip 12 if this becomes reality.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•if all communication electronics died on New Year's day, how long would it take for other time zones to notice
6·5 months agoThere was this thing that happened a few years ago. Usually the frequency fluctuates a bit, but averages out to 50hz/60hz. Many appliances are using clocks that use the grids frequency to time them. In one instance the grid frequency averaged slightly below their target over a period of time so clicks would show the wrong time (like a minute or two off). They adjusted the grid to be slightly off in the other direction to compensate and make the clocks catch up to real time.
Here’s an article about that: https://www.drax.com/electrification/electricity-causing-clocks-europe-run-slowly/

Technology@lemmy.world•Google & Facebook partner admits it can listen to device microphone to serve ads - DexertoEnglish
364·2 years agoHave you read the article? They’re claiming (!) that they would use ads on websites to use mic data. If you know anything about Android or IOS, you’ll know that you have to give mic permission to your browser for it to have access to anything. THEN the browser itself checks if a website needs access to your mic and you have to willingly give it. And lastly: Android indicates when your mic is hot with a green dot. So all of their claims are bs.
Come back if one of the OS developers admit to always listen on an OS level.

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•Should one remove all Reddit posts and comments?
63·2 years agoYeah, not actively supporting reddit anymore is one thing, but with deleting every comment/post you basically just hurt users. Reddit doesn’t give a fuck.
You won’t believe how often I search for a problem only to find 50 "Thank you"s for a deleted comment.
That was one of my biggest revelations last year. Figuring out I have ADHD and that’s why it’s hard for me to understand people, especially in crowded and loud spaces. Sometimes I found myself simultaneously listening to music, other people’s conversations and my own conversations. Makes it quite difficult sometimes.

It’s such a strange thing. For most of the illusions I can trick my brain to perceive both variants. This one is clearly black and blue. I can see that the black parts isolated can appear golden in the light, but for the life of me I can’t see it any other than blue. Brains are weird.
