ProgrammingSocks@pawb.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•Cross-platform video player GrayJay now available as Flatpak1·20 days agoThe GPL already forbids distributing without the source code being available. People who break GPL will break this license too, and they will have even less resources to fight it. I wish people would stop writing their own licenses and just get behind the GPL. There’s already tons of lawyers familiar with it.
ProgrammingSocks@pawb.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•Cross-platform video player GrayJay now available as Flatpak93·22 days agoNo thanks. The 4 freedoms are essential. Everybody using this is going to be shocked when they implement ads and/or sell it.

Sony still tracks you.English13·24 days agoI run a pivpn setup so that nothing is exposed to the internet at all. It’s just too dangerous now. It was bad back in the day, but now I literally have bots trying to join any public facing Minecraft server. It’s so many times worse now than it was a decade ago.

Newpipe still works fine for me. What’s the issue? Are you running the current version from Github?

A lot of classics and actually good modern manga here. Unfortunate - mangadex was great while it lasted. Pirate sites are hydra, if course, but mangadex was actually usable unlike a lit of other sites.

You have to at least vaguely be engaged in the politics of the internet (not to be confused with politics on the internet) to use these smaller platforms at all.
The average social media user just doesn’t care. They want things to work from their perspective, and it doesn’t matter how much data they give up, or privacy they lose, or any other thing that might be a negative to us that engage in the internet outside of “apps”.
IMO, this is a pro and not a con of federated social media, and means that your discussions will be smarter on average. Sometimes, I feel sad that the days of free (as in freedom) internet is seemingly gone, before I remember that you just have to look a little deeper, and it’s definitely still there.

ProgrammingSocks@pawb.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•What kind of mindset do you need to be succesful starting and continuing to use Linux.6·2 months agoLinux isn’t a product sold by a company. If they’re still thinking that somebody else is responsible for how they experience their technology they will not have a good time with Linux. You have to be able to take responsibility for your machine, and in our society of learned helplessness, people would rather give up that responsibility for perceived convenience.
Google works the way it does because it has basically unlimited resources. You will never find something that does EVERYTHING Google does, because running Google is like shoveling thousands of dollars into a fire constantly.
You have to choose either convenience or privacy.
ProgrammingSocks@pawb.socialto DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•No! THIS is a DeGoogled phone!2·3 months agoYes, it is. It’s the reason Graphene says themselves. Graphene is all about reducing potential attack vectors, de-googling just happens to be in line with that goal. An unlocked bootloader is a massive security vulnerability.

ProgrammingSocks@pawb.socialto DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•No! THIS is a DeGoogled phone!21·3 months agoYes, because they allow you to re-lock the bootloader after flashing a custom ROM. They’re also pretty trivial to unlock the bootloader on in the first place.

Nintendo is really banking on a charitability for US DMCA law that hosting services in other countries may no longer have. This is going to get harder for them very quickly I think.
Maybe it’s not so great how monolithic systemd is, but it has brought a lot of great functionality to the Linux world. Not as if Linux has ever been married to the Unix philosophy anyways.
