    Thank you very much for backing me, for your efforts and for putting all that so eloquently! I completely agree! Which isn’t to say that we don’t need forums where we share and teach each other the practical implementation of digital privacy, but this fight needs to be fought on both fronts.

    Again, just to have it said out loud, I’m not trying to go behind the mods’ back or talk badly about them! I appreciate them taking on moderation of this extremely important community on their free time, and that, too, shouldn’t be diminished.

    Unfortunately (?), I am not a STEM worker myself and as for programming, I just began learning C about six months ago, barely qualifying even as a hobby programmer. Which is to say, I have no insight into how well-versed or not these people are on history. With that said, I do believe that society as a whole - and feel free to call me a doomsayer - is about to face a third world war, because we haven’t yet broken the cycle that is tragedy ---> unlearn tragedy ---> tragedy. Society as a whole - not programmers and STEM workers - is forgetting history. As to why, I can only guess. Perhaps we have been made too busy to stay educated, informed and critical. We are stunted and we have been bereft of our tools and motivation to take action. When I say “we”, I mean people of the West, because in those parts of the world where Western imperialism has driven entire populations to poverty, there is a fighting spirit that we have all but forgotten… This is getting out of hand and very farfetched. Sorry!

    I did not know that about Arendt’s partner! Ever since we read the Banality of Evil as part of a German class, I have viewed her - or at least that particular work of hers - as source of inspiration, since, being born to a Jewish family, she also suffered at the hands of the Nazi for researching antisemitism. I do not view her theories as apologetic, but rather as very important messages to future generations: that every single person is capable of doing everything the Nazi did against the Jewish people under the “right” circumstances. That totalitarianism normalizes “evil” - please don’t get me started on the definition of that - and that with the right indoctrination, even sending a person to a concentration camp can become a banal task.

    Smack me for forcfully tying this together, but that banality is yet another threat to digital privacy, just as inaction (as per my previous post, which I realized now you never saw… shoot…) is. Marx says somewhere - heavily paraphrased - that the ideology of the ruling class trickles down to become the ideology of the people through various institutions and I hate to see just that, just now: the process of normalization of the invasion of privacy that is going on in the world.

    I agree! However, there are technological hurdles that normies need to overcome in order to gain even the slightes amount of privacy. These hurdles can be daunting. And being privacy conscious at all comes with social stigmatization. I’d rather see people take small steps towards learning how to manage their digital footprint - or whatever parameters they need to make adjustments to in order to gain privacy - and at the same time gain confidence and pride in those small steps than seeing them become overwhelmed by pursuing privacy because “it’s a thing” and getting exhausted, burned out and losing hope and motivation in the process.

    I believe I understand the psychological mechanism behind it, but it is unfortunate, nontheless, that people separate any part of their private life from politics. Even though the idea is that we have voted for whatever parliament/congress ultimately decides, as long as we are subject to law and order as defined by and for the profit of the ruling class, we are not safe. One day all contraception could become illegal. Sugar, butter, flower and other basic groceries could be rationed. Libraries could be forced to remove anti government litterature from the bookshelves. Or, as we have seen in, for instance, Iran and China, Internet access could become restricted, censored or removed all together.

    One of the saddest examples of this collective mentality in which everyday life and politics are seen as separate worlds is Japan, which I experienced while living there for six years. A lot of people took democracy for granted, saying that politics is a discipline or a profession that they would rather leave to the “professionals”, meaning the politicians. As if the people shouldn’t put their noses where they don’t belong. As if political decisions didn’t directly impact their everyday life.

I think we need a human dimension to sentencing because I believe that leads, overall, to more humane and constructive corrective value. As long as there is some oversight watching out for unreasonable abusers and a channel to deal with tha t, then I think we are better off in the long run.     I don’t know what tools you would use for this on MacOS, but you could use some firewall implementation to block internet access for user and system apps that your are concerned about. If suspect that unwanted connections are being made to specific hosts (IP addresses or URLs) and you know them, you could block access to those specific hosts with a hosts file or, again, with your firewall.

    To summarize the above:

    1. read up on firewalls for MacOS
    2. read up on hosts files/DNS based blocking for MacOS

    You could also simply disconnect from the internet while typing, then saving and encrypting the saved file, deleting the plain text file and only then reconnecting to the internet.

    Lastly, don’t put effort into pursuing privacy blindly. Formulate your threat model. What do you need to protect? What do you want to protect? From whom? Why? Without this, you’ll burn yourself out.
