I found myself in a similar place a few years ago. I ended up putting what was left in a very large, heavy planter that I could take with me when we moved.
I use Instagram primarily to follow quilters, who are primarily older and mostly women. A lot of them are relentless self promotion machines, as you would expect of small business owners who advertise through Instagram, so of course they are creating the new account Instagram has alerted them about. I’d imagine a huge proportion of new Threads users are the same, and their followers get notices about them using the new service. There is no way for Lemmy to do that.
They think they are too big to fail and enough users will stick around up voting repost bots that it will be profitable.
Term limits empower lobbyists and career staffers and encourage legislators to give less of a shit about their constituents. I know “career politician” is often considered a dirty word, but having competent, knowledgeable elected officials is a good thing.
