Next year, a few days before the first of may, googe or duckduckgo “1. May protest $nearestBiggerCity” and you’ll find out. If you’re from the US, you’ll probably find this site among the first search results. If you’re from anywhere else you’ll find something similar for your region.
This has been a thing on the first of may since 1890. Just mark the 1.5.2027 in your calendar, chances are good that it’ll happen again next year.

Linux@sh.itjust.works•With the release of Ubutnu 26.04, a reminder of what they used to stand for.
3·18 days agoI’ve been (mainly) using Linux since 1996, but I can still acknowledge that Windows 7 (which was still recent in 2012) was peak Windows. As far as I know, Microsoft didn’t put ads in their start menu until Windows 10, a decade after Canonical.

4·28 days agoHe was quite successful with his dying. He did it on the first try, unlike his boss.
Are you kidding? That’s literally one of the most famous volunteer task. There’s more than half a million volunteer water rescue personnel in Germany alone. Granted, they’re not only life guarding, but that’s a big part of what they do. Not at pools (those are usually run for profit, so they can and should pay personnel for that) but at lakes and the sea.

151·1 month agoYou don’t have candles on your birthday cake just because you’re grown up? What a sad life.
No homo, but I love to blow a big candle on my b-day.
Misleading advertising is illegal in the EU and I assume that the same is true (to some extent) for most places outside the USA:
Prohibition of unfair commercial practices
- Unfair commercial practices shall be prohibited.
- A commercial practice shall be unfair if: it is contrary to the requirements of professional diligence, and it materially distorts or is likely to materially distort the economic behaviour with regard to the product of the average consumer whom it reaches or to whom it is addressed, or of the average member of the group when a commercial practice is directed to a particular group of consumers.
Whether the advertising above is illegal, would be for courts to decide. It depends if an average customer would fall for it. That would also depend on the circumstances: Next to a highway where you only have half a second to read the sign, it would be illegal, but maybe not next to a footpath where you can read it for 2 minutes before passing it.

Ask Lemmy@sh.itjust.works•What's the best pizza you've ever had?English
4·2 months agoAbout ten years ago I had a pizza with “friarielli” in a pizzaria in Milano without knowing what that is. The friarielli tasted so good that I really wanted to eat it again, but it doesn’t seem to exist where I live, and even in northern Italy it wasn’t in season whenever I returned there, or at least I couldn’t find it.
But last year I finally got my own little garden and this spring I got my hands on some seeds of (hopefully) the right plant. I’ve just sowed them yesterday, so hold your thumbs for me. Maybe I’ll finally eat my favourite pizza again in a few weeks.
The pizzaria was probably this one, according to my Google maps history: https://maps.app.goo.gl/yo9Tk8Mqr7YViYVM8
I second this. Every woman reaching voting age should be eligible to their own patch of land to live on. As should every man. Let’s expropriate the real estate companies! 🚩

1·3 months agoWe use more land for golf courses than photovoltaics.. I’m not trying to say that golf courses are bad (even though they’re not exactly environmental friendly) but it shows how little space photovoltaics actually need compared to other things.
Also, don’t underestimate the amount of material a nuclear reactor uses. A single cooling tower of the Phillipsburg NPP weighed 32,500 metric tons. That’s roughly 250-500 MW in solar panels, and then you haven’t even built the reactor or the generator. I found sources talking about half a million tons per nuclear plant.
Correction: The three sisters is an agricultural technique that is used by me in my garden. And I’m neither a Cherokee nor a Haudenosaunee.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Guys, what's the best Linux distro to install on my PC?
9·4 months agoI don’t want to brag, but I have like 5 Linux distros in my garage. And I drive them all, regularly.
When you’re old enough to buy physical media, your eyes have gone bad enough that you don’t need 4k 8-)
I regularly use optical drives for the movies. Why should I pay twice the price to “buy” some movie from Apple or Google? I rather wait 2 days for the mailman to deliver me a Blu-ray that doesn’t only have better quality, but also keeps working when some company decides to stop licensing the stuff I purportedly “bought”. Second-hand discs sometimes cost as much as 1€.
But well, I might be a bit old school, as I just got a few new vinyls delivered to me the other day.
Just add
// @TODO find out why this crashes our application sometimesto fix that issue

If you need hashing for non-security applications, that’s fine, but I’d still suggest SHA-1 or -25 or even just CRC instead, as that’s something modern (as in less than 15 years old) CPUs can usually do directly in Hardware.
