You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK the Tesseract dev made a blacklist of Lemmy users that get filtered from their FrontendEnglish
8·8 days agomaking a list of undesirables to disenfranchise is a rather alarmingly faschy thing to do >.>; just sayin’…
i’ve been mulling it over and it creeps me out more and more. all too easily, a misplaced sense of self-importance in a principal administrative figure can spoil like milk forgotten in a hot car. I’ve seen this sort of thing happen PERSONALLY.
Someone I had known became the big fish in their small pond. They began systematically ejecting and excommunicating anyone who didn’t agree with them. Eventually the only people left in their circle were exclusively yes-men who did not DARE to challenge or question anything–lest they were to dispose of said yes-men too. Yes-men incentivized to say ‘yes’ to, and thereby condone, and then encourage, increasingly outrageous and deranged impulses.
The first domino has fallen over and struck the second, which is now tilting past any point of equilibrium. For a while longer, everything will be fine; the people who ingratiate themselves will be selectively immune from the same criticisms that get others blanket-‘disappeared’… so hey, one might enjoy using that frontend for now…
…but I implore mindfulness and wariness. Very seldom do I see someone cross the first line without crossing the rest of them eventually. It’s not impossible, but it’s far from common. Anyone still using that frontend, if they start seeing “a certain kind of person” being bolstered exceptionally at the expense of everyone else, it’s time to bail.
While it’s not my place to dictate what the tesseract dev does, I do recall reading that they specifically were feeling dissatisfied with the work, and disappointed by the way their users were acting, and had been considering abandoning the project. While I can’t speak for this developer, obviously, I can’t help but imagine myself in their position… and on that basis I for one believe I would have sooner relinquished the project and walked away entirely rather than see myself turn it into a tool of targeted harassment and marginalization With A Cheerful Coat Of Paint.
…
it’s just setting off my alarm bells real bad. This looks too much like other abusive shit i’ve been through over the decades.
but eh. maybe i’m just paranoid… grain of salt, mileage may vary, et cetera.
Wow. I had no idea this was going on. Well…
If the author of the code, who was distributing it for free, wants to pick and choose who gets to run said code, then one is welcome to a refund of $0.00, I guess.
…y’know, I feel like, hypothetically, if I made a list of ‘bad people’ and used it to control access to software made available to the general public, that would put me in a fair bit of hot water. If it doesn’t count as targeted harassment, it still creates a literal set of targeting data that anyone else can pick up and harass.
But one way or another, i don’t think it’s very constructive for me to to continue to exist within the vicinity of someone who hates me. even vicariously through their code. just kinda stings is all…

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Switched from reddit to lemmy because they banned my accountEnglish
1·20 days agoYeah fam u.u i feel ya…
Hard times–and it’s not even just reddit.
The things we once took for granted are now associated with new hardship because profit for Party A requires suffering for Party B.
Every new loss I encounter, I no longer have the energy to get upset. I just resign myself. “Oh well. That figures. Just gotta accept it and adjust.”
It’s weird how I’m less emotionally volatile and vulnerable than I had ever been in prior stages of my life despite the world having become distinctly worse since then. But … getting upset takes energy; i have no energy to spare.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why is it okay to curse out anybody from any religion and call them slurs dedicated to that religion except Islam?English
2·20 days ago… Depends on your definition of “okay”.
A maximally “good person” would not consider it OK to criticize someone’s religion, but they may criticize harmful activities that individuals perform, even if such individuals use their religion as an excuse to do harmful things–because it is not about religion, but rather about choices and actions.
However, I am admittedly not a maximally good person, no matter how much of a cinnamon roll I do wish I could be… And I draw the line a little further into the gray area, in that the thing that gives me pause is not “it’s a religion” but rather “participation in these activities–” this religion in particular “–strongly correlates with specific marginalized demographics.”
There is a very strong likelihood that dissing islam will also, with proverbial ‘splash damage’, hit people who are also going through a lot of awful shit with government leadership and legislation that somehow manages to STILL be more cruel and more corrupt than a given “global north” or “western” nation state.
So … It’s just awareness of context.
Also there is a chilling effect from all the highly publicized incidents where journalists are murdered for saying something that some individuals whom are Muslim do not agree with.
(although that does not make them look any worse than when israel murders journalists lately…)
Generally speaking, the normative population of christians (using the broadest possible definition in Literally Anyone Who Prays To Jesus) does not, statistically, suffer nearly as much oppression as muslims.
So … due to EXTERNALITIES, mocking islam itself, specifically, feels too much like ‘punching down’ for my liking. It is my hypothesis that there are other people hesitating to talk shit for the same or at least similar reasons. Meanwhile, mocking christianity is quite a bit less like ‘punching down’ because the most corrupt, powerful, dastardly sacks of shit on the planet dress themselves up as christians.
…That said, I do not think anyone has a leg to stand on as far as trying to dictate at other people that they are “allowed” to mock some religions but not others. I for one believe this is a personal choice that one must make for oneself. If you wish it did not happen, the extent of one’s individual influence is to choose not to oneself.

Sometimes the “I built my pc from scratch starting with smelting the copper ore for the circuit board traces and folding together the case out of a single sheet of steel with my BARE HANDS” perspective has blind spots with regard to everyday usage.

2·27 days agooh yeah, definitely! i agitate toward socialist (and anarcho-syndicalist) policy at every chance i get! On top of that, I’m also continuously attempting to plant subliminal ideations toward it among people with whom i interact on a daily basis putting it in terms my propaganda-poisoned colleagues’ minds might actually grasp–
'if only we could decide this democratically, huh?`
‘after all, we’re the ones who actually have to do the work and see how things transpire here on the front lines of the whole operation…’
‘nobody upstairs knows how things work around here better than us.’
‘btw don’t we have some kind of right to peaceably assemble and petition for redress of grievances, ACTUALLY…?’
‘idk i just like democracy bro ;3’
‘kinda sucks how our tax dollars are being spent to prop up a genocidal regime so they can give their citizens free healthcare while we’re stuck with nothing, doesn’t it…’
‘hey if you want cheaper eggs, i know a place near here…! it’s a co-op market owned and operated by the local farmers and a dozen fresh eggs is like … sometimes HALF of what the big chain stores charge!’
“ohhh i’m so sorry to hear your cable company treats you that way…! it’s awful! y’know, it seems like every time people ask a corporation to handle infrastructure it just makes more waste, fraud and abuse… but as for me, the fiber optic line to my house is fast and stable and cheap, and it’s owned by all us residents in my town. Municipally owned! I would love for you to have that too. wouldn’t you? why not ask your neighbors how they feel about it?”
all of these examples are exaggerated and hyperbolic for illustrative purposes. i usually have to be a lot more subtle in order to avoid tipping them into a performative faux-patriotic ‘four legs good two legs bad’ thought terminating cliche fugue state.

Our fate was sealed since the 1960s.
The timeline branch where we avoided this was the one where Nixon was executed for treason. We are, unfortunately, obviously in one of the variations of the world where that did not happen.
(edit: i know he was only sworn in by 1969 and resigned in 1974 but the prerequisites for dragging his sick bastard carcass to justice were supposed to have been laid out in JFK’s second term. … Which also didn’t happen in the timeline where we have had the misfortune to find ourselves)

4·28 days agowhile i love how pretty clothes are when they’re marketed to women, i’m actually more often disappointed by, like, how they oftentimes (not every time but too many times) seem flimsier, and cost more, and are literally less functional and practical. like, what the heck is WRONG with them going out of their way to make pants that only have the appearance of pockets but no ACTUAL POCKETS?! i like pockets ;~; i can keep my stuff in them…
so sometimes i wonder if it’d just be better if people could be somehow convinced to stop enabling such pointlessly gendered design that puts an entire dang half of the whole population at a disadvantage. i think male-identified individuals should have pretty clothes too and it’s sad that there’s a social stigma about it
