A piefed account more technically, but yes. I technically have a lot of minor forum-like accounts around the web, but no crossover with my IRL friends, nor do I think I would enjoy interacting with them via these platforms.

Yep. I’m not sure when it started.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you have any common recipes from other countries that sounded completely weird to you when you first heard of them?English
3·4 days agoOver a decade in Japan and I still struggle with natto and never order it. I got over the smell. I don’t really care for the slimy/string texture of things, but I can eat other things. If I try to eat more than one or two beans at a time, I involuntarily gag. Some flavor component of it kills me. I make my own ferments (Korean-inspired daikon with fish sauce, chili, and some other stuff is the most recent, fermented at room temp for a few days then into the fridge) and have no trouble with them.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you have any common recipes from other countries that sounded completely weird to you when you first heard of them?English
1·4 days agoSame. I tried it once as a kid and hated it. PB sandwich? Delicious. Toast with jam? Awesome. Put the two together? Nope. I think it was probably a texture issue, but I have no desire to try again now in my 40s.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you have any common recipes from other countries that sounded completely weird to you when you first heard of them?English
2·4 days agoThat looks amazing. I’d like some chili and maybe some onion or something (and probably plantain rather than banana), but I’d definitely eat this if someone put it in front of me.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If somebody invented smart glasses that detected lying, how do you think the public would react?English
5·4 days agoA lot of broken relationships followed by relief years later, assuming near-universal adoption; if everyone were just honest, it would stop a lot of issues. Abusers, gaslighters, sociopaths, etc. would presumably hate the whole experience.

This isn’t even true in many countries. In Japan, houses are basically worthless after 20 years. Land value also only increases in a few areas.

Programming@programming.dev•Is Rust supposed to be that hard?English
1·5 days agoI haven’t touched rust in a few years so the cookbook and the language may be different. I agree that the book didn’t do a great job of preparing for a real project of any size/complexity, but there are other resources out there worth reading. Reading best practices documents might help some things make sense.
The borrow checker is something you will get used to. Lifetimes is another one that took me a bit to understand. I only ever did a little bit in C and even less in C++, but did have professional experience with Java, Perl, JS, PHP, and more at the time I first started looking into it. I was able to replace some fairly simple production PHP code with rust that ran much more reliably and with fewer resources, but didn’t tackle anything huge.

Europe@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Has there been any time period in Europe where the civilization experienced complete peace ?English

More seriously, I do agree that things were more chill between the USSR collapsed and before things kicked off in the Balkans. However, this is from what I remember and based on what news I got in the US pre-internet, so it’s possible there’s something I’m forgetting or never knew.

Definitely for a time in '80s kids wear. I did see adults then (and more recently) wearing them. But mostly farmers and mechanics. Not sure if it were ever adult fashion back then
