Quite the conundrum. I work better alone, but I want to go far.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Out of ten, how would you rate your ability to empathize with people with opposing viewpoints?
1·24 hours agoIf they’re disagreeing about objective reality
I always enjoy hearing about how people come to believe what they do. There’s pretty much always a logical basis for it and the difference just comes down to their heuristics failing at one particular point and cascading.

5·8 days agoFahrenheit makes sense. The Tide website recommends washing at 16C minimum for regular detergent and 4C minimum for cold water detergent.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Never buying milk from Walmart againEnglish
1·9 days agoThe brands I see that produce regular milk also make lactose free milk here, so I’m guessing they’re all processed the same way within the brand but just with added lactase at some point. Different brands probably do things differently. It’s usually 2-3 weeks for both regular milk and lactose free.

3·9 days agoIs your lactose free milk prepared/packaged differently from your regular milk? The two keep for just as long here.
You’ll have to clarify what you mean by nutrients. In seeing some disagreements in the comments about whether things are nutritious or not because they’re using different definitions.
E.g. are you looking for high Calorie? Proteins and healthy fats? Large quantity of micronutrients? Large diversity of micronutrients? Or something else?
I got this too, and it basically immediately disappeared again. Our admins are doing a pretty good job of handling this kind of spam.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How can I learn to estimate the likelihood of real-world events?
3·11 days agoFor one off events like 9/11, you can’t. There isn’t an accepted definition of “probability” for things like that. Either The question is completely nonsensical (Frequentist view) or the numbers are more or less all arbitrary (Bayesian view).
Honestly, if my career didn’t rely on it, I would entirely skip the publishing part of science. It takes so much more work to communicate your findings than to make them. Of course, that doesn’t help the cause since no one else will be able to build off of my work if I don’t share it.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Did it really used to be common for guys to go to a bar every night like in Cheers or The Simpsons?
2·15 days agoDepending on the gym, some are a lot more third-spacey than others. I’ve been to a smaller gym where people just hang around after their workouts to socialize, with occasional impromptu dinner outings when the gym closed for the night. I miss that place. You still meet people at bigger commercial gyms, but it’s not the same.
It especially sucks when you’re having a nice conversation with someone, then OP deleted their post, putting an end to all of those conversations. Or if someone posts some useful information that you want to save for later.
The OP should have the right to delete things they put up, but they shouldn’t be able to delete everything associated with it too.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people using the "þ" character?
10·16 days agoRequire a specific interaction from the user to display your actual email (e.g. click on a button). Even if they run a headless browser, they’ll still have to parse the page to figure out what to do and then do it. That’s much more expensive.

For me, it’s a matter of restoring the convenience and UX that you’ve given up by leaving the big providers.
