People generally recommend Debian-based distributions because they tend to be more popular, have more applications designed first and foremost to work on them, and tend to have the most community support because they are more popular.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll be sure to keep it in mind :)
As someone planning on visiting there in a year or two, do you have any advice?
I think that’s kinda common in a lot of countries. If you look like you aren’t from there then they will speak in English.
As someone planning on going in a year or two, this is really good advice. Thank you.
Well that’s a word I’ve never seen before lol
I think these things aren’t designed to stop everyone, just most people, non-technical people - not people like us who know how to work around limitations etc.
It still sucks though, and it’s a stupid idea.
Oracle and Adobe seem to be the most evil companies, but we should be careful not to anthropomorphise them.
Yeah I use .com for my seedbox.
I’m not sure how fair it is. How would you know what work there is if there aren’t any tickets being assigned for example?
I believe his point was that if students want to find a way to be distracted, they will - with or without cellphones. I know I certainly was able to distract myself with doodling lol
In my defense, I use .ml because it tends to have the best stability/uptime. I think I was using .world before, and it was down for like 3 days straight at one point so I stopped using it and started using .ml more.
With that said, I think blocking entire instances is kind of extreme unless it’s very warranted. With that said, I appreciate the ability to move between instances as necessary, or even host your own. That’s one way Lemmy will always be better than alternatives like Reddit.
Took the words right out of my mouth. This is concerning but I guess we will see what happens.
Kind of. Reddit 15+ years ago still had a larger user base than Lemmy did, but it feels kind of close to how Reddit did back then. Lemmy still needs some work, it has a long way to go, but I do like it so far.
Honestly this might be a good thing. It might push more users to Firefox causing more competition for Chrome/Chromium.
It’s true, we are za warudo.
True, at the end of the day it does come down to number of users, unfortunately. More users does mean more potential help/contributions. I just wish more people would switch to Firefox or another non-Chromium browser.
Maybe that would be a good thing, maybe it would force people onto Firefox?
If it were a company other than TeamViewer I’d probably believe them, but since it’s TeamViewer, they could just as easily be lying since they have lied in the past about breaches IIRC.
