Or until a journalist dares to link to a website, that the state recently criminalized the creators of, though the state itself links to that specific site, too. And depending on how easy the access for the police is: You might wanna refrain from being too popular (like a famous singer or actor) or from being active against climate change or right wing extremism. Your personal data is easily leaked through the police to anyone of their friends.

Did the US have more success with finding a good site? Or is this again just companies betting to hand over the waste to the public when they are done? As I remember in germany the companies got a cheap buy out for the waste after the closure of nuclear power plants where setup.

What people want in life often comes from what they experienced themselves previously. You mentioned charity. I’ve put 13 years of my life into being a scouts group leader, organizimg weekly meetups, many events and multiple scout camps a year. I’m very passionate about this, since I’ve got so much out of being a scout since I was 7, growing up with a community, that was meaningful and not harsh and punishing as school. I wanted tp give these experience back to the next scout generation. And during my time as scout group leader I could grew even more, making my own life better through helping others. Soon I will shift my focus away from the scouts (currently its too much together with work; also I want kids soon).

I’m not saying, that you need to do this. I just wanted to explain where my motivation comes from. I get a sense of fulfilment and I’m proud of what I’ve done and I’m proud of the kids, that I saw growing up and now being group leaders themselves.

Finding something, that you are passionate about is very important. It doesn’t need to include external responsibilities. Taking responsibility for your own self, like putting in hard work to learn a new skill, can be as fulfilling as the above.

In the line of: If something bad happens to you and you are not able to get out by yourself, then it is your own fault and nobody should help you. Though this is already often talked about.

Another scary thing is how little you like your government (being it of the State or federal). It seems Americans don’t want the government to do much, not seeing at as a tool to handle modern problems. Back when I was at Reddit I read a thread about why americans opposed state run free healthcare for all. One user wrote something like “Don’t see, why we should solve the price issue by letting the state (so taypayer) pay”. The user just ignored the immense power, that a government of a big and wealthy nation has. It can easily press pharma companies to set prices low enough, without stiffling research and innovation. But that would be against freedom, I guess? Really difficult to understand.

Verification methods could be showing your id card and your face to a webcam, or showing up at a verification office in person (at least in germany we have this with our national postal service). Of course the porn sites don’t want to implement this. And I cannot really blame them. Nobody would give a random porn site their real identity and it would still be very easy to get porn without verification.

I don’t know about Mikrotik, but it might also be interesting to buy something, that is running on OpenWRT, an open source router OS. That way you would have maximal configurability. I recently purchases a GL.iNet AXT1800 for my own home lab (though I’m currently only using it for the isolated homelab, not for the rest of the house). You can even host stuff directly on the router with OpenWRT. I currently have Centos 9 repos hosted there and DHCP/TFTP for network installation of VMs via PXE boot.

I know, that GPUs are often problematic with linux, mostly due to driver issues. I’ve had my share of this with my ubuntu desktop. Or is there currently something new/specific, that I missed? Either way I currently don’t want to do things with GPUs.

I want something with some beef on it. I want to experiment with an Openshift cluster and that needs quite some resources. So I decided to go with the mentioned NUC.

Ok, I will check them tomorrow (I really need to sleep soon, as its already 2am). I mainly want to experiment with different technologies, that I already know from work. Openshift, Docker, Puppet and Ansible for example.

Currently I’m not focussing on media stuff, more on experimenting with different technologies, that I use for work (like Openshift, Docker, Puppet, Ansible). Having dedicated hardware, that gets me further than some small VMs on my PC will be great for that.

Though I might move to media stuff in the future. Heard a lot about jellyfin, for example. Though then I need to upgrade my home network too. It still is limited to 100mbit. But I already have wired connections through most of the house.

It’s good to know about the possibility with thunderbolt network adapters. I think I’ve already read about that somewhere. At this point I haven’t really though about high speed network connection (my home network still runs on slow 100mbit routers and switches). Thanks for that tip
