You’ve gone back too far! I meant mid to late aughts (2005-2010)
It’s because a lot of people here are people who miss the earlier days of the internet and are trying to recreate that feeling. I’m not that old but it’s got me feeling nostalgic so I enjoy it

sciawp@lemm.eeto Technology@beehaw.org•Don't expect quick fixes in 'red-teaming' of AI models. Security was an afterthought1·2 years agoI agree with you but I’m just gonna say with basic regex (hell, even without regex) you can easily find bad words without the problem you mentioned above.
Word filters tend to suck in online games and stuff because they have to navigate players trying to avoid the filter, which I think could still be improved with a little effort

The people who are already on these platforms are the ones that don’t like any algorithm at all, so they tend to be combative about its implementation. I don’t think there will be mainstream appeal until it is easy and fun to use for the average person
sciawp@lemm.eeto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Hot take: developing an open source For You algorithm for mastodon that shows you posts based on your likes inbetween every other chronological post would be great72·2 years agoThat’s not really how most recommendation algorithms work. A good basic algorithm would be showing you content that the people you follow are following or showing popular posts from a certain category that you tend to like

I love it solely for the LWA reference

sciawp@lemm.eeto Fediverse@lemmy.ml•Stanford researchers find Mastodon has a massive child abuse material problem1·2 years agoOf course! I’m more referring to instances specially made for this kind of stuff. It’s so easy for anyone to boot up their own server, but I guess places like discord And telegram have similar issues
sciawp@lemm.eeto Fediverse@lemmy.ml•Stanford researchers find Mastodon has a massive child abuse material problem72·2 years agoThis is something I have worried about for a while. The core concept of the fediverse makes stuff like this really easy to do and there’s not really a solution. I guess government agencies just need to be on the lookout for it?
sciawp@lemm.eeto Fediverse@lemmy.world•"ActivityPub not suitable for implementation as the base federation layer in diaspora"English16·2 years agoI think it might be good to create specific protocols in the ActivityPub documentation for the various types of social media to ensure interoperability.
No hard rules, but a guideline for how to ensure you are maximizing compatibility, maybe.
sciawp@lemm.eeto Fediverse@lemmy.world•"ActivityPub not suitable for implementation as the base federation layer in diaspora"English26·2 years agoThis was a good read and it’s something I’ve wondered about. The fediverse is sorta built on this promise that everyone will be able to interact across any implementation of ActivityPub.
But that’s not really true. The different types of social media have wildly different implementations, where we have to rely on developers communicating and cooperating with other implementations for everything to work even a little bit

To be fair, money would still be going to Rowling. She is probably the most vocal advocate against trans rights and she has been cited in policies that endanger the lives of trans people. I think that is a much more reasonable boycott than being upset about pronouns
