Maybe that’s why I didn’t like Bluesky it was all attention-seeking and curated accounts

If you are looking for a vps to host your website, may I recommend Google cloud platform free tier? You have to give a credit card, and occasionally it messes up and charges $0.01 a month, but it’s pretty good.
Fuuuuck that.
Although I do enjoy their robot dj.
Fuck Spotify streaming exclusive audio content and calling it a podcast basically.
It could be end to end encrypted and safe on the network, but if Google is in charge of the device, what’s to say they’re not reading the message after it’s unencrypted? To be fair this would compromise signal or any other app on Android as well
I don’t think I’ve ever installed a different terminal besides the one that came stock… what am I missing out?
(Except on Android which doesn’t come with a terminal, I installed termux for some reason at one point, which I don’t use, and JuiceSSH which was so nice I kicked some money their way).
Thanks for reminding me why I never want to get into home automation!
Really cool read.
It doesn’t make sense to me to future proof wifi but not wired for $5 more, but maybe it makes sense to people in rural places
I have a PC from 2006 it is not “mini” and it has an awful CPU… :(
What would be a good used upgrade with 4x 3.5 bays?
Could be interesting to have a law that made this cheaper option illegal as it is more dangerous to society
Btrfs came default with my new Synology, where I have it in Synology’s raid config (similar to raid 1 I think) and I haven’t had any problems.
I don’t recommend the btrfs drivers for windows 10. I had a drive using this and it would often become unreachable under load, but this is more a Windows problem than a problem with btrfs
In some cases you trade the purchase history information for the 2% cash back or whatever.
You can also use a service like privacy.com to get credit card numbers for online services for a modicum of privacy.
I had friends who were addicted to ingress even though they knew it was vacuuming up their usage data, years before Pokemon Go
More like they can learn what the corner of the bank looks like
Also Obligatory: “You can pay for something and still be the product”
Yes, and if you follow people you’re interested in. There is an account called https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows which posts themed lists of interesting accounts. I followed Cory Doctorow because I knew he was on Mastodon, and then followed a lot of people who posted interesting posts that came across my feed from people I didn’t follow yet. There’s no algorithm so you discover stuff more naturally as people you follow share stuff, and you decide to follow that too

Every day that I play Pokemon Go, I’m aware that I’m making a Faustian bargain for motivation to take a walk in exchange for my privacy.
Yeah I don’t know why, I never really got twitter. But Mastodon was addictive for me. I always want to see what people are posting
Not right now, except that it’s going to follow the same cycle as everything else: good to users at first, good to shareholders at the end.
Build an account on Mastodon if you want to escape the cycle and tangle with different problems ;)
It really is nice there; people seem to like talking to each other about varied things, but it is smaller than Twitter so you may need to be on mastodon for some things and Bluesky for others you can’t get on mastodon
My gut instinct is to think, this is just a dumb person being mean on the Internet.
But upon reflection, no one would say this on yt, twitter, Facebook, etc. because people are sharing actual bullshit on there. You would be dunked on so hard for complaining about yt videos or just ignored. There would be no point in complaining.
On one hand it’s nice that Mastodon doesn’t have ads, and people usually don’t share bullshit, but does that logically result in attracting users who shit on someone for sharing a YouTube video, because sometimes other videos on YouTube are bad?
I like that Mastodon has actual conversations but I don’t like this guy being dumb.
