I would say that thinking includes the ability to generate novel ideas and the ability to reason. This ability to reason may include viewing a situation from another perspective than one’s self. An AI does not reason, it recognizes patterns in a huge dataset and generates output based on that.
Early millennial and for me the 90s were peak. To borrow from Hobsbawm, I think of that decade as the long 90s, starting on 9 November 1989 and ending on 11 September 2001.

Being able to reason from different perspectives, to change their worldview due to new experiences or arguments, the ability to adapt to different circumstances.
My take is that everything was worse back in the day, except for two things: climate change due to an unprecedented rate of global warming, and the ability to bomb ourselves out of existence with nuclear weapons, which simply did not exist before 1945. I worry about the first more than the second.
