Donations are a key part of what keeps F-Droid independent and reliable and our latest hardware update is a direct result of your support. Thanks to donations from our incredible community, F-Droid has replaced one of its most critical pieces of infrastructure, our core server hardware. It was overdue for a refresh, and now we are happy to give you an update on the new server and how it impacts the project.
Running a mirror network on donated hardware is sustainable until it is not, and the post admits the previous server was “overdue for an upgrade” which is a polite way of saying it was limping along on life support. The fact that community donations directly determined when F-Droid could fix critical infrastructure instead of having a real budget is both a feature of their independence and a ticking clock on reliability. Maintaining uptime on goodwill alone is a precarious model, especially as the network grows.
Yaaaaay!
