For a lot of privileged people, voting is a luxury. Look at all the candidates, and make a moral or philosophical choice, even if it means a statement vote for a candidate with no chance.
In reality, only 2 people advance, and with the absurd candidate field, strategy has to be taken into account. If the Democrats spread the vote too thin, you could get a runoff of 2 Republicans. That possibility cannot be ignored.
If you want to compare Becerra to other Democrats, be my guest. If you want to look at him and how he could be stronger as a less corporate Democrat, go ahead. If you want to attack his charisma, go for it.
But compare him against the current breed of Republicans. I’d take Becerra any day, and as such, a strategic vote for him is not a loss. Pretending corporate Democrats are just as bad as Republicans spits in the face of the children locked in cages, in the faces of the Palestinians that Trump and Bibi gleefully pal around after stomping on, in the faces of the people dumped off in random countries, of the people whose benefits have been cut, of the people whose voting rights have been taken away.
If Becerra and Steyer are the top 2 Democrats, I think it’s time to commit to one of them. This isn’t a game and we know what Republicans will do with power. The Democrats will disappoint and not do enough…that’s a much better world than active nosedives toward corporate authoritarianism.
We have democratic super majorities in the CA legislature. They could impeach a Republican governor the same moment he was being sworn in, on the excellent grounds that a Republican top two primary does not remotely reflect the will of the electorate. Even they refuse, there’s recall, and in the mean time the legislature can prevent the governor from doing much of anything.
There’s no reason to be overly worried about it.
All of that said, I think status quo Democrats share a lot of the blame for how this country got into this state, and failing to stop a candidate like Becerra really doesn’t bode well for recovery.
You should watch the news, it is interesting, the Republicans have figured out how to wield law enforcement to defy procedure and take over the judiciary to give themselves blank checks for power. Falling back on legislative procedure is a cool safety net if you want to have the blood of vulnerable people on your hands.
I get it, I wish the Democrats were way more progressive, but this tantrum of taking out frustration on the Democrats instead of the Republicans is privilege, and we are literally at the point of trying saving throws against actual authoritarians and fascists. The worst Democrat is better than the best Republican and I can not stand by and repeat 2024, when a year of trashing a centrist pushed progressives to get stuck in the rut of “my side vs. theirs” and stay home on voting day. If it’s Becerra, I proudly say “I wish he were more progressive and vibrant but I will take him over a Republican any day.” Articles painting him as a huge mistake are gifts to the far right.
The PRIMARY hasn’t happened yet. Reel in the “noooo you can’t criticize democrats!!” until the actual election.
You can criticize the Democrats, but you have to be strategic or you get 2 R’s in the general. Democrats are always stupid about strategy. An imperfect Democrat is better than a Republican, there are still people out there happily paying $7 in gas while Palestinians, Lebanese, Ukrainians, and Iranians die so they can keep telling themselves Kamala was still not a better choice.
If California gubernatorial primaries made any sense, then your statement would too. But they don’t, so it doesn’t.
Your statement vote in the primary will get us two Republicans to choose between for governor.
