Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Stubbed my toe on the couch, it’s the same one I maybe broke last year. Sigh. Also, ow.

      Ouch!

I visited a family member at a new house recently, and it came with these special toe-stubbing boards in the kitchen. The walls between cupboards don’t go inwards at the bottom where the little in bit is, and instead go straight down to the floor, creating a little stuck out board thing. It’s hard to explain, so here’s a photo I searched up online. I couldn’t find one exactly the same, but see in this photo on the left it has the board extend over the in part by the floor, where on the right the in part is cut out of the edge as well?

      Kitchen photo

      photo of kitchen

Now imagine that board thing on both ends, but also at seemingly random places along the bench as well! So you can be at the sink, then you step over to the dishwasher and BAM, your toe smashes into the demon-board.

Day trip to Nelson for Monster Number 1 and I today - we’re 15 months into his orthodontic treatment, with trips up every six weeks or so. It seemed like a good idea at the time 😂

Wow, that’s a long way to go for regular day trips! I hope the time between appointments increases, though if you’ve been doing it 15 months then I hope it wasn’t worse easlier?

Has been a very regular six-weekly trip right from the start. Maybe another 9-12 months to go, so at least six more trips!

Man, that’s gotta be rough. They can’t just do every second one via video call?

Are they actually adjusting it or do you show up, they take a look, yip everythings good, then you’re back in the car in 10 mins heading home?

I have a kid who the dentist says is almost certainly going to need braces when they are older. I’m assuming (hoping!) living in Wellington means we will be able to do it locally.

Yeah, it’s adjustments each time - moving the teeth in different directions. But appointments are usually no more than 15 minutes, so it’s definitely not in depth!

I love where we live, but this is definitely one of the downsides!

Also I plan to do the pictrs update this weekend (the one I said I’d do over easter but didn’t, mostly because I spent my time playing DREDGE 😆). I don’t know how much down time there will be, in my test run the site seemed to stay up while it migrated. Hopefully this is the case here!

I’ll also start trimming the cache as well. Currently lemmy saves full size images to display thumbnails, and never deletes them. So we have about 260GB of image data just sitting there. Someone built a tool to delete the cached images after a set amount of time, and I’ve been testing it out. There were some teething issues but everything is working nicely now so I plan to add this as well. This is mostly to help the backup process, which fails the offsite transfer part semi-regularly because of the size (and some weird speed issue we can’t get to the bottom of).

So I’ll do these two things possibly starting tonight for the pictrs update then do the thumbnail cleaner once the update is done, possibly tomorrow some time, taking advantage of lower traffic over the weekend.

Also the lemmy.world saga is definitely not over. They have implemented a new system that can reject kbin traffic if they start seeing huge volumes again, but currently we are back to having a lot to catch up on:

graph showing two big peaks in the number of activities we are behind lemmy.world, each around 500-600k and currently not much down from the second peak

With our special setup we are getting posts and comments straight away but the votes are delayed by about 1.5 days at the moment, which means Hot and Scaled will not really show lemmy.world posts because they will have 0 votes unless it has been a couple of days, and Hot ranks posts with a time decay which means the lemmy.world stuff won’t make it up to the top.

I really enjoyed it! I did all the mission things and then proceeded to buy the Pale Reach DLC and play through that!

I thought the balance was really good, where I could do just enough fishing to get enough money for everything, but I didn’t ever feel like I was grinding at all. It had a bunch of different areas each with their own storylines, and was about the right length for me (I think it was about 10 hours to complete everything, but I bought on GOG and played on Linux using Heroic Launcher which doesn’t seem to have tracked playtime). There are negative reviews about the lack of replayability but I didn’t see that as a bad thing really, I felt like the game really values your time and they had balance right for me. It was much cheaper than an AAA game so I feel like I got value for money.

Pretty cool that it was made by a team of 4 from Christchurch!

@eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz I reverse seared some steak last night!

My oven-safe thermometer is broken so I just left them in at 100 while other stuff cooked, then fried them just before serving. I overcooked them a little, was probably “medium”, but they were good.

I’m not sure it came out much different from my normal method though (fry first then put in oven).

Nice! It might just be personal preference I guess? But the temp probe is necessary IMO.

Also I find if doing multiple steaks it feels less stressful. I did 4 thick ones at the same time when I mentioned it the other day and it felt more manageable

Yeah I guess I can’t judge if I didn’t follow the instructions properly! Will need to get a new thermometer.

But also I think you’re right, I only did two steaks. If I was doing 4 or 6, it’s probably easier to get them all done to the same standard.

I was using some nice quality steaks (yay for free homekill), is there any benefit in having them sit in the oven at low temperature for poorer cuts in terms of making them more tender? (assuming they are still 1 inch+)

Normally I would go for a stew or fried up steak strips for the poorer cuts but there’s only so much stew we can eat 😆

I guess it depends on which cut it is. Do you know which part it’s from? If it’s a very lean one, I don’t know how much it would help. I think sous vide works pretty well for leaner cuts though.

Have you got a pressure cooker or multicooker? Could try making something like Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup. I guess you don’t need a pressure cooker but it makes it much quicker and less simmering to make it tender.

I’m not actually sure where it’s cut from! The worst steaks are simply labelled as “stewing steak” or “casserole steak”.

I have a pressure cooker, Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup sounds like a good thing to try, thanks for the suggestion! It might be a bit too outside the normal for the kids but they can just eat the noodles plain while the adults eat the yummy bit 🙂

I love making it in winter, very warming and delicious. I’ve improvised it with maybe 80% of the correct ingredients before and it still tastes good. Usually omit any chilli so the kids can eat it. Our eldest is a weirdo who likes to eat noodles and pasta plain, I can usually get her to have the noodles in the soup itself, but the beef must be in a separate bowl for whatever reason 🤷‍♂️ I guess it’s like eating instant noodles that way

Our kids will often just eat the noodles plain before they build up the courage to try the thing that’s supposed to go on the noodles. A nice easy way to have something new but still know the kids are being fed.

I’ll give this a go, hopefully some time soon! We have a bunch of poorer quality steak in the freezer, since we eat the good stuff first 😆

Do you use a recipe like this one? https://thewoksoflife.com/taiwanese-beef-noodle-soup-instant-pot/

                  Yeah that’s a good one.

Honestly I’ve done it with half the specific chinese ingredients from that recipe missing and it still can taste pretty good. Have some additional chilli powder or condiments on hand for adding into your own bowl is good too so everyone can customise their own

That sounds horrible! I really hope you get better soon.

I deleted my comment because I thought I was being too negative and whiny, didn’t realise someone had already seen it. In reality things are better today cos I’ve been able to keep an anti-nausea pill down (seems counter intuitive that this stuff is in pill form).

In better news a morepork has started hanging out in a neighbourhood tree again, meaning we get sweet sounds for ages at night.

I’m mostly down to a lingering cough thing, so not too bad. A bit more tired than usual perhaps, but sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s normal 😆

Haha reminds me of a post I saw the other day saying how funny it is that the treatment for ADHD is to take a pill at the same time every day

True! Until I met them I had always imagined they would have a beautiful “song”…

They also like to take part in the dawn chorus, which is pretty rough if you’re sleeping nearby.
