Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

On a different note, took the camper out on the weekend:

Nice, so you’re still getting good use of it and not sick of all being crammed together after you big trip then?

I did my switchover of GPU and power supply for my server on the weekend. Just swapped them, turned it on, it worked first time! I didn’t even give a blood sacrifice!

Of course I am now dealing with a Linux Mint machine with a 2025 GPU (AMD RX9070) which meant I needed to follow some instructions to support it, but it seems to be working well now. Only thing not working is hardware acceleration for Frigate, I had to fall back to CPU (I have a Coral so the GPU wasn’t doing much anyway).

This was part of my plan to build a PC for the kids to use, I get the nice GPU as the server has struggled a bit with transcoding (not the speed, but the age of the GPU doesn’t seem to be well supported across codecs). I also wanted more VRAM for playing with local LLMs (I’ve gone from 6 to 16GB). The kids get some new and some old parts.

It’s a struggle trying to decide whether to wait for black friday/cyber monday to get marginally (if at all) discounted parts, or just do it and get Christmas sorted.

I had major issues with Mint and my RX9070, it was just after release so nothing worked to its potential. Generic drivers only and basic display with most of the advanced stuff not detected.

About 3 weeks later; with the release of the 6.14 kernel; and me rolling back the various things I had tried to get it working. It all works well now.

Mate, I can’t get games to launch 🥲. Steam games seem fine but I can’t launch GOG games through Heroic, including launching the game directly. I seem to get a segfault. I’ve updated the firmware, on the 6.14 kernel, drivers are loaded, card is recognised by the system. Games through Steam seem to work which makes it more confusing. Games that worked before no longer work.

        Any suggestions?

Do you have any game you can launch through steam and gog/heroic?

I suspect steam is automatically enabling proton and gog isn’t.

It maybe that without proton it is trying to do software rendering, which fails.

I haven’t played games in decades…but I do keep an eye on the state of things.

I haven’t changed anything except swapping the graphics card and following some steps from a pinned topic on the Mint forums to get it working. It certainly says it’s using proton, and in fact I don’t have any wine versions installed.

However, it is suspicious that every game I’ve tried to launch through steam (perhaps 4 of them) has worked fine, yet none of the games I’ve tried through Heroic have worked. It definitely seems like a problem there, but it’s also a problem if I launch a linux native game that was installed through Heroic both from Heroic and just directly from the install directory (which should imply it’s not Heroic related since it doesn’t have the same DRM connection as a Steam game).

I’m going to install Lutris and install a game to see if that helps 🤷. I hope I can work this out, it’s actually the kids that use it and I have a promise to keep 😅

I think I’ve sorted it. I don’t actually know what the problem was, but I noticed I could download the same games from the GOG website and they worked fine. Steam games never stopped working. So must have been an issue with Heroic.

I uninstalled Heroic and deleted the config directory, and the reinstalled it. Now the games all seem to work 🙂

The kids will be very excited.

Yeah I had to update to the 6.14 kernel, Mint is still shipping with I think 6.08.

The card is working well it seems, the Frigate issue seems to be an issue with the ffmpeg version that ships with their docker container. I am sure I’ll get it sorted one day when I can be bothered putting in more effort.

Well something was wrong with mine lol, I installed the 6.14 kernel and it wouldn’t use it. I had to work out how to enable the grub menu so I could manually select it.

Actually now I think about it, it kernel panicked until I removed the xone driver and reinstalled the latest one after changing kernel. Maybe it failed to auto-update because of that.
