I think some are still so busy chasing clicks and eyeballs and simply don’t care. The people at the top of the MNCs that constitute our “journalism” most likely think all their money will shield them personally - or if it gets bad enough, they can take all their money and flee to another country.
Even NPR seems to be overly egalitarian with their coverage. Some individual shows are doing a good job (On The Media, Politics Podcast, though still not very vigorous IMO).
And there’s not much money in it. Same for PBS (Frontline has had good coverage all along, but it’s only so much).
