Not sad enough. How can you represent Lima Ohio and look willing to live? They deserve representation that actually reflects them

Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) called proposed plan to empower Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-NC) “the biggest fuck you to Republican voters,” Punchbowl News reports.

He also claimed “more than half of Republicans” will oppose it, meaning it will need majority Democratic support.

And the Dems will as an even bigger “Fuck you” to Gym “Look the Other Way as a Physician is Fondling Wrestlers” Jorden, and Banks.

Ironically, the more opposition from the GOPer conference, the more leverage the Dems will have in getting a deal to pass the empowerment.

Man, if they end up with an insurrectionist as house speaker…

Who am I kidding – it’ll turn out the same. The next Republican president will begin dismantling democracy on day 1.

McHenry may be a POS pro corporate forced birth conservative… but he’s not an election denier at least. FFS can’t believe this is the bar that is being set

On January 6th 2021 he wrote a letter about decertifying the election and said he said “I cannot violate the oath I took to uphold my constitutional responsibilities”

Why not have the GOP nominate McHenry and see what the GOP decides?

Jeffries party is the minority and the idea of him being speaker is a pipe dream. As much as McHenry sucks, he’s the “best” option offered so far and doesn’t appear to be part of the Q Caucus.

        It’s almost exactly the bar!

Congressional Democrats said they would support a temporary Speaker until January provided:

        • They voted to certify the 2020 election
        • They aren’t in the Freedom Caucus
        • They support the debt ceiling deal between Biden and McCarthy
        • They have a “track record” of governing

FWIW, McHenry seems to meet all the requirements (he helped negotiate the debt ceiling bill)

Conservatives know they can’t remain in power under democracy. Their base is dying off rapidly. It’s simple math. They’ll have to move left, or get rid of democracy. And they’ll try everything else, no matter how awful, before they ever consider moving left.

        Preview of 2027:

The Speaker may be an fascist intent on ending democracy in the US but at least he’s not openly calling for the extermination of minorities like the far right members of his party.

I think they can do this. The key thing will be that the entire House votes on it, because without that vote, all this guy can do is call a vote for the next Speaker (or recess the House).

They couldn’t have done this at the start of the term, though, because at that point nobody has been sworn in yet, committees haven’t formed, and the House session has no structure, so no business could take place at all. This is a bit different, because all that stuff has happened.

Ultimately, the House gets to organize itself, and if a majority in the House votes to allow a temporary Speaker, then we get a temporary Speaker.

How does one “Temporarily” vote on something? Outside of elections of course?

Can I temporarily vote for \ next election, and if I don’t like his policies take back my vote?

If the answer is no… then… well. It sounds a lot like Jim is dropping out.

He will never be Speaker (at least in this Congress as it is currently constituted), he is just not willing to admit it yet.

They are voting to give McHenry more power until January. After which they will be back where they started.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Refusing to drop out, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan told GOP colleagues Thursday he will back a temporary U.S. House speaker as he works to shore up support to win the gavel himself.

Jordan delivered the message at a closed door meeting at the Capitol as the Republican majority considered an extraordinary plan to give the interim Speaker Pro-tempore Rep. Patrick McHenry more powers to reopen the House and conduct crucial business.

As Republicans upset and exhausted by the infighting retreated for private conversations, hundreds of demonstrators massed outside the Capitol over the Israel-Hamas war, a stark reminder of the concern over having the House adrift as political challenges intensify at home and abroad.

To win over his GOP colleagues, Jordan had relied on backing from Trump, the party’s front-runner in the 2024 election to challenge President Joe Biden, and groups pressuring rank-and-file lawmakers for the vote.

Flexing their independence, the holdouts are a mix of pragmatists — ranging from seasoned legislators and committee chairs worried about governing, to newer lawmakers from districts where voters prefer Biden to Trump.

Congress faces daunting challenges, risking a federal shutdown at home if it fails to fund the government and fielding Biden’s requests for aid to help Ukraine and Israel in the wars abroad.
