Before, when texting a contact in my favorites who I text often, it would take 5 whole seconds between each command and occasionally replace a word with one that sounded similar but meant absolutely nothing within the sentence.
But now it’s different! Now, when texting the same contact, it takes 30 seconds between each command and occasionally replaces a word with a different word that sounds completely different but makes sense in the context of the sentence, but changes the meaning of that sentence significantly. Oh and it texts 555-555-5555.
I was texting “do you know what’s wrong with your mom?” to one of my 3 favorites who I text from the car very often. I caught the s/wrong/up but given how long it took to even get there I let it go. Then later wondering why he didn’t reply I checked my texts and noticed it was sent to 555-555-5555. So apparently I can’t text using voice from my car anymore, even though it’s been working since I got it 4 years ago. I had no clue this afternoon’s Android Auto update that I let go blindly while on the john was going to replace GA with Gemini.
So yeah I’m in a mood.

That’s so much better, AI finding new friends for you. Hopefully whoever is on the other side of 555-555-5555 is also looking for a new friend. We already know something happened to their mom otherwise Gemini wouldn’t have picked it to send your text.

I’ve been using GrapheneOS for years and recently decided to try my phone’s default Android. With stuff like this post and the Keep Android Open issue, I’ll be going back to GrapheneOS.

I have never had any voice command features work consistently so I don’t use them. Looks like a decade after I made that choice we are still in the same boat.
Yeah I have used it for navigation while driving. If I need to add a stop but anybody texting me while I’m driving gets to wait until I’ve reached my destination. They aren’t that important and if it is important then I’ll pull over for it
I remember using it for calling or texting someone really quickly while driving and it worked well for a time. Then randomly one day half the shit I tried would search the web for stuff and that was dumb as hell and distracting while driving so I quit trying.
I know, fuck AI and all that, but I have had 0 issues with android auto gemini. It’s much better than previously. It actually understands the words I say, and doesn’t require a super specific phrase to work.
I mean, that’s the whole problem with how AI works, isn’t it? (not considering the ethical and environmental impacts). It CAN work sometimes, but can then randomly choose to send the wrong text to the wrong number. It’s completely random, and you can never know when it decides to do something other than what you tell it to do.
It’s like having a personal assistant that is sometimes competent, and sometimes a teenager in a mood. And it has no worries about being fired.
And, more importantly, cannot learn.
Uh. Puzzling.
Will try. I feel like I’ve gotten “I’m sorry, I don’t understand” tooooo many times just asking questions that would pop up instant information if I actually googled it.
Did you find out what was (up) wrong with their mom?
I use Android Auto with GrapheneOS, but I’m too lazy to configure the microphone, and it would go to Google anyway so it’s not worth it.
Did you ever find out what’s wrong with your friend’s mom, though? Inquiring minds may be losing sleep over this.
