I was reading a comment section and I saw that some people were banned, but the comment wasn’t removed. This got me to thinking: how are banned and removed treates on the threadiverse?

When a moderator bans someone, do they choose whether to remove the comment, or leave it up for all to see if that is better?

Is it that some clients autoremove banned users, and some don’t?

Do some clients allow banned users to still poat in the community they’re bannes from, and it is up to the client to decide whether to show it or not?

What is going on?

    This is for Lemmy, not PieFed. Banned users can be completely wiped, removing all content (including from the modlog). This is helpful for CSAM accounts. They can also just be banned from an instance, or a community, with all content remaining up thus far. Users that are instance-banned are invisible to users from that instance, but often can actually comment on that instance from the perspective of their home instance.

    As an example, if someone permabanned me from Lemmy.world, Lemmy.world users could not ever see my comments, even the ones only on Lemmy.ml. However, Lemmy.ml users would be able to see my comments on Lemmy.world posts, and I would still be able to comment. I’d effectively be user-defederated.

    There’s more to it than that, it’s actually kinda complicated. PieFed works differently too.

      So if I’m reading a comment on blorp and there is a tag that says banned right next to the poster of the comment, is there any way to know what kind of ban that is and why I’m still able to read the comment?

        There’s a modlog you can find usually on the instances browser version.

        As for still being able to read the comment, it’s probably because he wasn’t banned for that specific comment. The symbol appears next to their name for all comments, not just the one that led to the ban.

        I can’t really answer for blorp or PieFed, as I use lemmy and the browser. Lemmy and PieFed deliberately handle banning in different ways due to different design philosophy.

    When a moderator bans someone they have the choice to remove that person’s posts and comments too

    In the communities I moderate I usually leave comments intact unless they are offensive, I’m happy enough to let people see me trying to reason with the person and then being unreasonable before banning them

    You can often still see the person’s deleted comment or post of you look at their profile

    I don’t think a banned person can vote on a community, as we banned serial down voters from one community the down votes reduced
